#1: Hybrid Identities

Updated: Mar 13, 2019

Below is a mini scrapbook of my hybrid identities, which show the global and local aspects of myself.

Aside from being a fan of the Korean culture, I would also like to say that I have become more socially integrated with the global community through the use of media and technology. Most of the information I get about non-local news are from the internet or television, which are two major types of media. Through the use of internet, I got to communicate and unite with people across the globe much easier. With the knowledge that I have, I've always made it my goal to raise awareness on different social issues such as poverty, gender inequality and children's education and health. When I'm helping raise awareness, I get a sense of responsibility to act on what I am preaching so I always try my best to participate in different activities that would help unite people globally.

For my local identity, I mentioned that I'm a Novo Ecijano, a resident in Nueva Ecija. Our dialects are Tagalog and Ilokano, which I spoke and understood although I am not fluent in Ilokano. Another local identity I have is as a performer in arts, where I showed pictures of myself with friends, wearing our costumes for a presentation. I also showed a local identity of myself as a Filipino through my love for Filipino cuisine and our customs such as being affectionate towards our grandparents. Our lolos and lolas will always have a soft spot in our hearts. Another local identity of mine is as a Catholic; it is a known fact that majority of the Filipinos are Catholic or Christians and my family is quite strict when it comes to religious practices. Some other local identities that I would like to mention are I, as a student; and I, as a daughter.

If you would ask me, "What thoughts and attitudes, feelings, experiences, do you have about these hybrid identities?", I would say that..

The most apparent hybrid identity I have is I, as a Filipino who's fond of Korea's culture. Sometimes I feel a bit of guilt whenever I catch myself liking Korean music over Filipino music; liking Korean fashion over Filipino fashion; liking Korean dramas over Filipino dramas; and the list goes on. Because of media and technology, I have gained easy access to interacting with Koreans, watching their celebrities, and learning more about their pop culture and fashion. This has influenced me greatly to the point that I have started doing my makeup and hair like them; dressing up like them; etc.

Although no matter how much of a fan of Korean culture I am, I will never leave my nation and my love for the Filipinos will always be greater than anything else.
